Women of Wealth Speak Out

OUR LETTER

We, the undersigned, watched in horror as first, the U.S. House and then, the U.S. Senate passed tax legislation that is morally bankrupt, intellectually corrupt, and economically indefensible. If signed into law, this legislation will further destabilize an already precarious social dynamic and cause irrevocable damage to both our nation’s finances and its moral center.

As though engaged in some perverse game of economic Jenga, lawmakers who wrote this legislation systematically eliminated elements of the tax code that are essential to promoting stable American families in order to pile vast amounts of additional wealth onto a tiny portion of the economic elite. Rather than using our nation’s tax code to protect working Americans and grow the middle class, they have initiated a wholesale transfer of wealth away from regular citizens and redirected it to some of the richest people in this country, many of whom contributed to their political campaigns.

Today, 20 percent of all American children live in poverty, 28 million Americans do not have health insurance (this legislation will add 13 million to that list), and millions of senior citizens – our parents and grandparents – struggle to stay alive on inadequate Social Security checks. Our nation has an opioid epidemic to overcome, a crumbling infrastructure to repair, and entire cities and territories to rebuild. And yet, with no formal hearings and virtually no public debate, these lawmakers have – in one dramatic and unconscionable act – reduced the nation’s revenues by more than $1.4 trillion.

To add insult to injury, the lawmakers who voted for this bill have already begun to use the “deficit crisis” they themselves are in the process of creating to justify cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and virtually every other major piece of legislation passed in the last 80 years to help working families, the elderly, the chronically or seriously ill, and the poor. In a particularly shameless display of elite class warfare, these lawmakers eliminated most of the deductions for state and local taxes, which provide the bulk of funding for public education, while almost entirely eliminating the estate tax. In doing so, they have handed a $200 billion tax-free windfall to the children of America’s richest .01%, a punch in the gut to a nation that prides itself on equal opportunity.

To be clear, this legislation goes far beyond the norms of conservativism. GOP lawmakers in the House and Senate have re-written the tax code to benefit not just the wealthy but those who are wealthy because they own capital rather than those people who make their money through their skills and labor. Their plans primarily benefit concentrated owners of stock – including foreign investors, passive owners of pass-through businesses, and the heirs and heiresses of dynastic wealth. In the America they envision, Wall Street fund managers and trust fund babies will pay half the tax rate of cancer doctors, nuclear scientists, and almost everyone else who actually works for a living.

That is not the decent and fair America we seek to build. Quite the opposite, in fact.

In voting ‘for’ or ‘against’ this legislation, members of the House and Senate have made their values abundantly clear. Now we call on our fellow citizens – in particular the millionaires, billionaires, and CEOs who would benefit most from this disastrous tax plan – to state publicly their position on this legislation. It is past time for our citizens to know exactly who is on their side, and who isn’t.

We urge every decent citizen in America to join us in demanding an end to this assault on our nation.

For Our Nation,
The Undersigned Women of Wealth
